Third Party Reports - The College of Physicians & Surgeons of

Ontario

Third Party Reports are an important piece of information in deciding whether a patient will have custody of a child, is eligible for disability benefits, or will receive insurance compensation. The Third Party Reports policy has been revised and updated. The new policy emphasizes the importance of recognizing that a report to a third party is outside the usual doctor-patient relationship: a physician is expected to provide an unbiased opinion about a diagnosis, rather than to act as a patient’s advocate. The policy keeps the solid guidance of the original version on communication, records, timeliness and consent, but clarifies key elements, including the importance of providing reports that are objective, use neutral language, and are free from personal judgments.
